Karen joins glass, metals, stone, and wood into airy and delicate sculptural forms. Her painting and mixed media further explore themes of color, translucency, transparency, and dimension.

In July, 2011, Karen will be guest crew onboard the SeaDragon, a research vessel run by Pangaea Explorations, with Algalita Research as the scientific research partner. SeaDragon will be sailing from Hawaii to Vancouver through the North Pacific Gyre, the largest floating "island" of plastic waste in the oceans. She has been doing a substantial amount of research and artwork relative to ocean plastics, in video, photography, and sculpture. This SeaDragon voyage will allow her to experience directly how humanity's plastic waste collects in the ocean's gyres, and learn from the lead scientists how the areas are mapped, measured, and analyzed.
