“My paintings begin with attention—to color, light, atmosphere, and the relationships between forms. Working primarily from landscapes and florals, I use expressive brushwork and heightened color to translate what I observe rather than reproduce it literally. I am interested in the spaces between things: where one color meets another, where a landscape shifts into atmosphere, and where familiar forms begin to feel abstract.
After a 25-year hiatus from painting while working in the corporate world in Los Angeles, Carroll returned to Massachusetts and began painting again, initially inspired by the garden surrounding his home in Manchester-by-the-Sea. That garden became a way of relearning how to look—at repetition, changing light, seasonal color, and the fleeting nature of a moment.
Whether painting flowers, coastal landscapes, or more abstracted subjects, my work is an ongoing exploration of what happens when we slow down long enough to notice.” —Artist Statement
